Everybody wants me!

I guess that I have, actually, done an awful lot of (self) promotion recently. I emailed the campus about induction sessions and received a staggering number of positive responses. I emailed an oncology dept administrator about reference management sessions and now everybody wants to come and join in. And, for some strange reason that I don't understand but which may be due to university terms and dissertation time coming up, lots of other readers have been in touch while I was off (only for 2 days. 2 days!!) with enquiries about searches, training sessions, help with searches.

AND I even remembered to have a meeting with a colleague for his midway probation point. Management, outreach, librarian, it's all going on.

My time management skills are being put to the test, which is why I'm still here at 5.30pm on a Monday. Rats!

On the To-Do list... still...

  1. Prep for session on Refworks, and sessionssss on Endnote (numerous, hence sessionssss!)
  2. Write up notes: private prisons talk; Thames Valley - latest talk; copyright training session; Iain Chalmers talk; NLP book; other book(!).
  3. Chartership plan/ portfolio work
  4. REF - emails.. TBC
  5. NHS Evidence leaflet
  6. Prepare for Evidence 2011 presentation for 21/03/12

In order of priority. For next week when I'm back at work... after a Reviewing for Reviewers training session at Osney in the morning. When did I get so popular with readers?! It's great!

Today's induction: Post/ reflection

Eight people came for the induction at 11am this morning. Tea/coffee/biscuits were provided, and were enjoyed. I made two notes of topics that I talked about today that I hadn't prepared or thought about:

1) Information about the number of books members can borrow (10 for 2 weeks).
2) How to log on to SOLO to find out what books/items you have on loan, renew, save titles to your 'e-shelf', download that list to Refworks/ Endnote, ordering Stack items.

Our tour of the premises was rather entertaining, as our quiet study room is heavily in use today! Seven people are in the main room, and at least one person in the book room. Tuesdays are becoming Busy. It is beautifully quiet and peaceful next door. And it's warm in the building, or rather it's an ambient temperature for once, not too hot/cold.

I'm rather pleased with how things are going. I've got reference management sessions all booked up for the next three weeks, and should probably put on some more for people on this campus for 22nd March. This meets at least two of my SMART objectives from my Annual Review last May:

1) "Increase usage of the Knowledge Centre space, book and journal collections (etc) by University.. staff and students on the Old Road Campus by developing and undertaking a marketing campaign to these groups" - don't like the wording, but I'm certainly meeting this objective.

2) "To develop and maintain relationshps and support services for nominated subject areas on the ... Old Road Campus".

I'm also meeting a third objective through these inductions for people on the campus, as I can ask a captive audience about their information needs and answer specific questions!

3) "Develop an awareness of information needs of research community in the Old Road Campus Research Building and how best we can meet these needs". Well, I'm doing these monthly inductions as a direct result of a meeting with a departmental administrator about how we, the library service, can meet their, the department, needs. Actually, I think their information needs are largely based around needing a quiet study area to write up papers (yes, check), and some reference management help. As well as our document supply service. We are meeting their needs! And if we aren't, I'm doing my best to present a friendly and welcoming impression to encourage people to ask for what they may not be getting, such as e-access to 'medical physics' journal, which is the topic of my next email to colleague Jo...

The Bodleian Knowledge Centre - an oasis of calm

Quick moment to reflect

A photo of my cat for good measure and to remind myself of what my priorities are in life: family, work, cats, sleep...

This morning, I'm due to give a library induction to nine people. This is only the second scheduled "introduction to the Knowledge Centre", but as I only had three people attend the first one a month ago, the stakes are slightly higher today (more people, from departments based outside our big green building, etc).

Chris and I have set up the room with one table for paperwork, and chairs in two rows, leaving space at the back of the little room for the trolley with tea/coffee/biscuits (we offer nourishment to encourage people to come along for the 11am slot). I thought I was ready for the session, yet a quick look at The Powerpoint Presentation made me think that it was a bit tired, and didn't truly reflect how great our Knowledge Centre is/ can be. I've added a slide with points about what library membership offers - and now that I think of it, I must add a point about being able to access the building with your swipe card once we've added membership! - and a bit of clip art to reflect the 'oasis of calm' that we can offer people in the form of our quiet study and book rooms.

I refer back to previous posts to remind myself of the Reflective Practice questions:

Do > Plan > Review
What? > So what? > Now what?

I've certainly DONE: I 'did' the induction last month for three people from this building.

I PLANNED it: I sent out an email to people in this building, I ordered tea/coffee/biscuits, I prepared the powerpoint slides, the room, the handouts.

I've now REVIEWED: I decided to send out an email to the entire campus, to attract people from all of the departments in the area, and broaden out the induction. If I'm going to do this, surely the motto is 'the more the merrier'? I've also now reviewed the powerpoint presentation to jazz it up a bit.

We'll see how today's session goes. I need to talk to a colleague about a tailored Endnote X5 leaflet first... and a presentation we're due to give to our colleagues on 21st March about the Evidence 2011 conference that we were privileged to attend last year. So much to do! So little time! (Ahh, time management, another worthy topic of conversation. But make it quick, because I must get on with my Action list for today!)

Yes, yes, chartership...

So much going on in my life right now. Not enough mental energy to think about Chartership portfolio, the 1000 words, etc. Lots to come - promise! - but I have to focus on me a bit more and my poor, battered mental health. Onwards and upwards!

In other news, today is the last day that we have Amanda with us as our PCT outreach librarian. The end of an era. And so we say goodbye....
